There is a Hallyu wave flowing everywhere, especially in India and are you on board with it? If not then this is definitely for you!

Let’s understand Korean Dramas a little bit better

Whenever I talk about my love for KDrama ( Korean drama) or KPop music (Korean pop music), people immediately judge me! It’s ok, I truly believe that once one becomes educated about the South Korean entertainment sector, they will either be addicted to KDramas or at least understand the WHY behind the addiction.

Hallyu – The Korean wave with respect to various Korean cultural practices

How Korean dramas are different from our regular dramas?

  • Amazing plot lines – Kudos to the scriptwriters! Even though you know there is going to be a lot of predictability, we still get reeled in with the way the story is taken forward.
  • Simple and shorter number of episodes – Most of the Korean dramas have 16 -20 episodes. Each episode is for 45- 50 minutes.
  • Rich in diversity/ Genre – These shows showcase a lot of different professions, Korean cuisines, fashion, architecture, their religions, mythology, and concepts like time travel, supernatural e.t.c. You name it and they would have written a story about it. So you will be spoilt for choice here
  • Amazing acting skills – The actors are all world-class professionals. You have to experience their acting to realize how good the actors are.
  • Neat scripts without unnecessary crassness – In this era of unlimited entertainment, it’s not easy to find sitcoms that aren’t over-dramatic. So if you want to avoid a lot of over the top scheming and swearing and keep it simple then Korean dramas are the best fit. They have a good deal of scheming and darkness but nothing which will affect you terribly for days. When I watch certain gray or dark sitcoms, I find myself a little bit moody and too serious. I would rather spend time watching something that is a little uplifting.
  • Stress Buster – Whenever I feel like a headless chicken and heavily stressed out and need some time out, this is my safe haven. The added bonus is that they have really cute actors. Some people might not agree but once you get hooked onto Korean Dramas, you will understand what I am saying.
  • Learning a new language and their culture – Due to my love for everything Korean, I ended up enrolling myself online and learning to read Hangul(Korean alphabets). It is very easy to read, and equally fun to learn to speak the language. Their culture is as beautiful and colorful as any other Asian country’s. Their traditional dresses (Hanbok) are very pretty and colorful.

So in conclusion, I learned a new language and learned to appreciate a different culture from mine, which in turn helped increased my tolerance levels towards different perspectives in the world. An this is the reason that I am listing this blog under the Personal Development category

The following dramas are my favorites and wouldn’t mind watching them again. These dramas have strong plot lines, beautiful direction, a good dosage of humor and romance sprinkled throughout and memorable characters. I am keeping the list simple, as we are just starting out. And is a great start if you want to try out Korean dramas.

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon

Genre: Action, Comedy, Fantasy Romance
No. Of episodes: 16
Year of release: 2017
IMDB rating: 8.3/10
My rating: 4.8/5

Story Line: ‘Do Bong soon’ is a small person but super strong. She can lift cars and crush bones very easily. She was born with these powers and keeps it a secret from others. She has had a crush on her best friend for a long time. Through a twist of fate, she becomes the bodyguard of the millionaire – ‘Ah Min Hyuk’, who seems to be smitten by her since their first meeting. Throw in a mad serial killer and a funny gangster and you have the right recipe to keep you entertained through each episode.

Why this drama: This drama is super special to me because I like how the female protagonist is portrayed. It is our heroine who picks up the male leads from bars and ensures that they reach home safe. The male leads keep telling her that they will keep her safe but it is always her who saves the day. It is a breath of fresh air compared to all the dramas casting their female leads in similar molds of pitiful helplessness despite initially casting them as being strong natured. It is funny, sweet and has a good amount of thrilling moments. Give this drama a try and you will not be disappointed.

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo

Genre: Comedy, Romance, Sports
No. Of episodes: 16
Year of release: 2016-2017
IMDB rating: 8.4/10
My rating: 4.8/5

Story Line: This drama is inspired by the life of South Korean Olympic weightlifter gold-medalist ‘Jang Mi-Ran’ and it’s about college athletes who are fighting for their dreams and finding love. ‘Kim Bok-Joo’ is a student at Hanwool College of Physical Education. She has shown strength like no other since she was a child. ‘Jung Joon-Hyeong’ is Kim Bok-Joo’s best friend. He is a born swimmer but ever since he was disqualified from his first international event, he suffers from a ‘start trauma’. Along with ‘Kim Bok-Joo’, he overcomes his troubles and finds his dream and love.

Why this drama: It is a great joy to watch how Kim Bok-Joo our female protagonist grow both as an athlete and as a person. It has enough elements of love, drama, laughter, and sports to keep you up late into the night to finish the drama.

Laughter in Waikiki

Genre: Comedy
No. Of episodes: 20
Year of release: 2018
IMDB rating: 8.3/10
My rating: 5/5

Story Line: Kang Dong Goo dreams of becoming a movie director, but he is cynical due to all the bad luck he has encountered. Cheon Joon Ki wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps and become an actor, but he is now just a minor actor. Bong Doo Shik came to Seoul to become a scenario writer, but things have not been easy for him. These 3 men run the guest house called “Waikiki” in Itaewon, South Korea. Their guest house is facing bankruptcy and then a mysterious baby and single mother appear at Waikiki and things become more chaotic and funny than usual.

Why this drama: This drama was very successful and had an extra 4 episodes added to it later due to its popularity as compared to other dramas with only 16 episodes. You simply have to watch this series to understand why it became so successful and there was even a second season to it. It’s a complete laugh riot till the end. Hats off to the entire team for producing such an entertaining drama!

Fight For My Way

Genre: Comedy, Life, Romance
No. Of episodes: 16
Year of release: 2017
IMDB rating: 8.2/10
My rating: 4.9/5

Story Line: Ko Dong-Man used to practice Taekwondo back in the school days and now he makes a living as a contract employee while going after the UFC title. On the other hand, Choi Ae-Ra gave up her dream of becoming an announcer and she works at the information desk of a department store. This is the love story of two people who chase their dreams in life.

Why this drama: I love all the characters in this drama. Our young protagonists face all the challenges head-on and do not back down. The show manages to portray the struggle required to achieve our dreams quite realistically without overdoing the drama. You will be forced to feel for their wins and loses. The romance part is quite addicting too. So do give it a try and enjoy the ride.

The Beauty Inside

Genre: Drama, Romance, Supernatural
No. Of episodes: 16
Year of release: 2018
IMDB rating:
My rating: 4.9/5

Story Line: Han Se-Kye is a top actress, also known as a troublemaker, with many rumors around her. To others, her life appears as a mystery, when in fact she is faced with a strange occurrence where she must change into a different body and new identity every once a month for a week. She encounters Seo Do-Jae, a brilliant man who is an executive at an airline company. He seems to have it all, a perfect appearance, knowledge and a good job, but he has a secret too. He suffers from Prosopagnosia, the inability to recognize faces. However, he manages to hide this from the world and every day makes an effort to remember people by their personalities. Seo Do-Jae’s life begins to change when he meets Han Se-Kye. She is the only person whose face he can recognize. But with Han Se-Kye’s constant disappearance and change, how long can she keep her secret?

Why this Drama: This series is not that well recognized as the other 4, but I still decided to add it here because I just couldn’t wait for the episodes to be released every week. I started this series for the male protagonist but fell in love with the female protagonist badly. I love a strong female character anytime than a female who always needs help making up her mind or for even arguing with others. It is a simple love story but I don’t think any Romance genre lovers should miss it.

I hope you have a great time watching Korean dramas. Let me warn you, KDramas are very addicting by nature. Start watching only when you have time on your hand. Have clear time limits otherwise it is difficult to control viewing dramas.

Do let me know if you already are a Korean Drama lover and what are your favorites in the comments below. I want to thank Shyama my friend for introducing me to this world. 🙂

Spread the love
